Book Review: The 3 Minute Rule

Learn to compose a super concise and compelling pitch for your idea, product or service. Imagining you only had three minutes to get your point across, this artificial constraint will force you to be more creative and most importantly get to the point.

Book Summary Notes: The 3 Minute Rule by Brant Pinvidic

  • Usually we aren’t given the perfect captive audience for our ideas and pitches. We need to learn how to present our plans in under three minutes.
  • Even with a captive audience we usually don’t retain everyone’s attention for the entire time, sometimes 3 minutes of focused attention may be all you get.
  • The key to a great 3 minute pitch is knowing what information to include and what information to leave out. Be selective. Details can be left for follow up conversations.
  • Your pitch should answer four questions by its end; what is it? How does it work? Are you sure and finally, can you do it? Make sure answers to these four questions are included and be concise.
  • Your pitch should only contain approximately 25 sentences and across those sentences you want to have answered the questions listed above.
  • Don’t forget to craft a killer opening. Some questions you can use to help with making it would be what most excites you about the project? How did you discover the project or what excites you the most about being able to work on it?
  • Remember to finish off your pitch with a hook, something memorable that leaves an audience thinking that, that was cool. Something that can and will stick in their minds.
