Decision Points
Decision Points are the points in everyone’s day where we need to make a choice that potentially impacts the rest of the day. Do we go to lunch with the co-worker or stay and finish the last part of the project we were working on?
Many of us fly through our days on autopilot letting our habits and routines take over. But we need to be more conscious of the choices we’re making each day.
The Depletion Effect
The choices we make each day put a tax on our ability to make further, good decisions. Each choice we make uses a little bit of our mental reserves for the day, it’s the reason a number of people favour doing the same thing each day, for example wearing the same style of clothes. By doing this they are denying themselves choices and therefore maintaining a higher level of this reserve of ability to make good choices throughout the day.
Fighting Distraction
The human brain actually evolved to be distracted. Our ancestors needed the ability to quickly switch tasks in order to potentially save themselves from an encroaching predator or to take advantage of any number of opportunities that may have presented themselves.
These days this trait is far less desirable and we can manage it to some extent, mostly by changing some aspects of our work environment. We can silence or switch off many devices as well as by switching to easier tasks after completing more focused ones to allow our brains time to wander.
