Create Space Book Summary Notes:

  • For the first time we as humans are needing to create empty space in our lives instead of filling it.
  • Reflection is one of the keys to doing great work, it requires the right amount of space to be done well though.
  • There are 4 kinds of space: temporal (time), physical (location), relational (the right people) and psychic (somewhere conducive to good thinking).
  • CEOs often have less than 15% of their work time available for solitary space.
  • Research studies a group of daily commuters and found that those that used the commuting time for reflection on their days were happier and more productive.
  • Reflection can be a great way to learn about ourselves. We also need to spend time learning about other things as well.
  • Creating the right space is also important. We need a space to think, to connect with other people and also space to do good work.
  • The first steps towards higher levels of productivity is planning. Setting clear goals and prioritising them is a sure fire way to continue to grow.
  • Remember that all things carry an opportunity cost. To do something is to not do something else.
  • Set weekly meetings with yourself. The three objectives for said meetings should be setting a strategy, adopting a growth mindset and raising your own productivity.
  • A useful method for prioritising is the 4D method. Do, Defer, Delegate or Drop. The key to this system is to be highly selective about what ends up in your ‘do’ section. Set an extremely high bar so that you can allow more of your time for other things.
